INJURY MANAGEMENT TEACHER TRAINING

Gain longevity in your yoga practice

A weekend exploring injury management and understanding your body on a deeper level.

focus & goals

Injury can be our greatest teacher because it shows us not only where our resistance is but what the patterns are behind it.  This weekend, we will explore how the asana practice can heal our bodies through the use of props, modifications, and specific alignment cues. We will look at specific platforms in the body and understand how to create stability in vulnerable parts to help gain longevity and prevent injury

This weekend is open to yoga practitioners and teachers who are looking to deepen their understanding of the yoga practice and for teachers seeking to improve confidence by refining your skills to be able to read different bodies and adjust according to the individual’s unique imprint

This Injury Management Teacher Training will be a weekend dedicated to teachers and practitioners of all levels. These 3 days can also be attended separately.

Restoratives and The Nervous System

Restoratives help us to relax and heal. They create what is known as the rest and relaxation response in our nervous systems which cultivates deep healing. Many of us are used to being  on-the-go and because of this, we can experience anxiety, sleep disorders, injury, and sickness. Restoratives can help bring the body back to a deep sense of balance where we can begin to repair our nervous system. From here, we
can induce a natural state of energy where the system can repair. The results are improved sleep, inspiration, health, digestion and increased vitality. Joan will open with a discussion about the different parts of our nervous system and how we can elicit the rest and relax response through yoga and other quieting practices. We will end with a restorative practice guiding you into a deeply relaxed and peaceful place.
All levels welcome!

Working with your foundation, the feet and pelvis
Afternoon a discussion on Injury Management

The feet and legs help to protect our lower back and provide our foundation. When our foundation is off, it can cause misalignments throughout our body causing pain and injury. In this workshop and practice, we will look at the bones of our body and understand how to align with our deep center known as our plumbline. We will also look at surrounding muscles and learn how to stabilize vulnerable joints such as the sacrio-illiac joint and lumbar spine. When we move slow enough in yoga practice with attention to alignment and form, we can recruit deep muscles that stabilize and connect us to our center. We will review basic pranayama practices to help alleviate stress and create a light and grounded feeling within.
A practice suited for all levels and teachers who wish to deepen their understanding of how to read bodies, working with props, and learn specific alignment cues.

In the afternoon, we will open with a discussion on injury management:
– what causes injury and how to prevent it
– how yoga practice can help it.

We will then review anatomy that supports the lower half of our body and take a deep dive into understanding how the postures can build vitality and support for our skeletal system.
When our bones are aligned, our muscles can work in an optimal way, creating a heightened sense of energy within. We will review the postures we practiced earlier and discuss common injuries for the knees and lower back and how certain postures and sequences can help heal these vulnerable areas.
We will end the day with a quieting wind down practice helping to integrate everything we learn throughout the day!

The shoulder girdle and our neck

With the multiple dowardward dogs and chaturangas of your daily vinyasa practices, your shoulders can be vulnerable to injury over time.
In this workshop, we will learn how to use props and alignment cues to better understand how to stabilize your shoulders and protect your neck. Our neck has a ton of mobility and is not designed for weight bearing poses, similar to our shoulders. To bear weight on our upper body, we have to have an understanding of how to stabilize the shoulder girdle and access our thoracic spine to help engage the muscular energy in this region. Joan will guide you through a workshop style practice working with props to help you understand how to externally rotate your arms to access your upper back. When we can connect to our center line in the asana practice, it helps to prevent injury and add lightness, to help us better prepare  for inversions and backbends. We will look at inversion preps, and backbends that support our posture, helping us to gain more awareness on how to work in a safe and efficient way as we move into these challenging postures that can have a highly transformative effect.

In the afternoon, we will review the anatomy of the shoulder girdle, the muscles that support the shoulders, and the neck. We will look at different set ups to help support us in inversions and backbends to protect the vulnerable areas. We will also look at common shoulder injuries and discuss postures and sequences that can help to remedy these areas.
We will wind the day down with a quieting pranayama practice helping us to alleviate stress and find a sense of balance and ease within.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND THIS COURSE?

As yoga practitioners we gain awareness in our bodies through our yoga practice. Through asana practice, we connect to areas of the body that are unknown and learn to quiet the parts that are overactive, eventually cultivating balance which can create longevity in our practice and lives.

As yoga teachers we are sought-after healers, and students will come to us when they are in pain. We can help our students make appropriate adjustments to protect and/or strengthen weaker or vulnerable places in their bodies through the understanding of what we have gained from our own practice.
